Exploring Amorebieta-Etxano's Location
Amorebieta-Etxano is an inland town, meaning it's not on the coast. It's found in a region called Durangaldea within the province of Biscay. The town is about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) east of a bigger city called Bilbao.
The town sits in the valley of the River Ibaizabal. This river later joins the River Nervión a few kilometers north. The area around Amorebieta-Etxano has rugged mountains and a long, interesting history.
A Look at Amorebieta-Etxano's History
The municipality of Amorebieta-Etxano was created on January 26, 1951. This happened when two communities, Amorebieta and Etxano, decided to join together. They were both part of an older administrative area called Merindad de Zornotza.
Other parts of that old district became part of a nearby municipality called Muxika. The new coat of arms for Amorebieta-Etxano shows how these two communities came together. In 2014, Amorebieta had a population of 16,907, while Etxano had 221 people.
Discovering the Town's Features
The town of Amorebieta-Etxano is divided into several areas or districts. In the center of Amorebieta, right by the Ibaizabal River, is the church of Santa María de la Asunción. This is a large building with a Renaissance style. It was started in 1555 and opened in 1608. It's famous for its beautiful altarpiece, which is a decorated screen behind the altar.
Another Renaissance church is the Parroquia de San Juan Bautista de Larrea. This church dates back to 1647. In 1704, it was given to the Carmelite Order to become a convent, which is a place where religious people live.
In the San Antonio district, you can find the hermitage of San Miguel de Dudea. A hermitage is a small chapel or shrine. Close by is the López Palace, which is built in the Neoclassical style.
A large research and innovation company called Tecnalia Research & Innovation has a branch here. It's located in the Parque Empresarial Boroa and employs about 1500 people.
