The Amos G. Winter House is a special old house located on Winter's Hill in Kingfield, Maine. It was built in the mid-1890s. This house is a beautiful example of Colonial Revival style architecture. It stands out even though it's in a quiet, inland area.

The house was designed by Francis and Freelan Stanley. These talented twin brothers are famous for creating the Stanley Steamer car. The house even had a unique heating system. It used a boiler from a railroad engine! The Amos G. Winter House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

What Does the Amos G. Winter House Look Like?

The Winter House sits on a hill. This hill is just north of the small village of Kingfield. It's also south of the West Branch Carrabasset River. From the hill, you can see great views of the village. You can also see the Western Maine Mountains.

The house is made of wood and is shaped like a square. It has a sloped roof and a strong stone foundation. The front of the house looks balanced and even. There are two round sections on each side of the main door. These sections are two stories high.

The main entrance has a small porch. This porch is held up by fancy columns. Above the door, there's a half-circle window. The round sections of the house have curved windows. These windows have a large pane in the middle. Smaller windows are on each side. Three dormer windows stick out from the front roof. The main part of the house has smaller sections on each side. Inside, many of the original decorations are still there. This is true even though the building has been used for different things over the years.

Who Lived in the Amos G. Winter House?

The house was built for Amos G. Winter. He was a local businessman. Mr. Winter owned a grain business and a general store. He was also good friends with the Stanley twins. The Stanley brothers grew up in Kingfield, just like Mr. Winter.

The Stanleys added many new ideas to the house. One of the most interesting was the heating system. It used steam and had a boiler from a railroad engine. They even planned to add a steam-powered elevator, but it was never put in.

The Winter family lived in the house until 1950. After that, the building was used in different ways. First, it became a doctor's office and clinic. Then, it was a restaurant and an inn. Later, it was changed into apartments. In 2015, it opened again as "The Inn on Winter's Hill."
