Becoming a Professional Golfer

Amy turned professional in 1975 when she was 18 years old. This was right after she graduated from Palisades Charter High School. Her very first win as a professional came quickly. It was at the Orange Blossom Classic, only her third tournament. Because of her great start, she was named the LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

Amy had many successful years. She won four tournaments in a single year three times. These years were 1979, 1980, and 1984. Her best year was 1980. That year, she won four tournaments. After winning the 1988 Dinah Shore, Amy started a fun tradition. She jumped into Poppie's Pond to celebrate her victory. This is now a famous tradition for winners of that tournament.

Her 1991 win was her 29th career victory. At that time, the LPGA Hall of Fame required 30 wins to join. Amy tried hard to get her 30th win for several years. In 1999, the LPGA changed its rules to a points system. This new system allowed Amy to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
