An An (Chinese: 安安; 1986 – 21 July 2022) was a special male giant panda. He lived at Ocean Park in Hong Kong. An An was a gift from the Chinese government in 1999. He became the oldest male giant panda living in human care. He passed away in 2022.
An An's Life Story
An An was born in 1986. His birthplace was Sichuan, China. This area is famous for its giant pandas. He first lived in the Wolong National Nature Reserve. This is a protected area for pandas.
A Special Gift to Hong Kong
In March 1999, An An moved to Ocean Park. He was a gift from the government in Beijing. This gift was for the people of Hong Kong. He traveled with another panda named Jia Jia. Jia Jia was a female giant panda.
Living at Ocean Park
An An lived a long life at Ocean Park. In 2017, he turned 31 years old. This made him the oldest male giant panda living in human care. His companion, Jia Jia, had passed away in 2016. An An continued to live at the park.
An An's Later Years
As An An got older, his health started to decline. In his last few weeks, he became very weak. He also stopped eating his food. On July 21, 2022, the vets at Ocean Park made a difficult decision. They decided it was best to help him pass away peacefully. An An was 35 years old when he died. He lived a very long and happy life.
