Ana Merino (born in 1971) is a Spanish writer. She is known for her poetry, novels, and plays. She has also written books about comics. Ana Merino has won several important awards for her writing.

About Ana Merino

Ana Merino was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1971. Her father was also a writer, José María Merino. From 2004 to 2009, Ana Merino taught Spanish at Dartmouth College in the United States. In 2009, she moved to the University of Iowa. There, she helped start a special writing program for Spanish speakers. This program, called an MFA, began in 2011. She is now a full professor at The University of Iowa. She teaches creative writing and cultural studies in Spanish. She was also the first director of the MFA program from 2011 to 2018.

Her Books and Awards

Ana Merino has written two scholarly books about comics. These are El Comic Hispánico (2003) and Diez ensayos para pensar el cómic (2017). She also wrote a book about the artist Chris Ware in 2005. She wrote a novel for young people called El hombre de los dos corazones (2009). She has also published nine books of poetry. Ana Merino has received several awards for her poetry. These include the Adonais and Fray Luis de Leon awards. She also won the Diario de Avisos Award for her short articles about comics. In January 2020, she won the Nadal Award in Spain for her novel El mapa de los afectos.

Other Activities

From 2004 to 2014, Merino was on the Board of Directors for the Center for Cartoon Studies. She was also part of the International Comic Art Forum from 2001 to 2011. Her articles about comics have appeared in several magazines and journals. She has also organized four comics exhibitions. She wrote a bilingual catalog called Fantagraphics creadores del canon (2003). Ana Merino currently lives in Iowa City.
