Biography
Ana Merino was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1971. Her father was also a writer, José María Merino.
From 2004 to 2009, Ana Merino was a Spanish professor at Dartmouth College. In 2009, she moved to the University of Iowa. There, she helped create a special writing program called the MFA in Spanish Creative Writing. This program started in 2011. She was its first director until 2018. Today, she is a full professor at the University of Iowa. She teaches Spanish creative writing and cultural studies.
Ana Merino has written several books. These include two scholarly books about comics. She also wrote a youth novel called "El hombre de los dos corazones" (The Man of Two Hearts) in 2009. She has published nine books of poetry. She won important awards for her poetry, like the Adonais and Fray Luis de Leon awards. In 2020, she won the Nadal Award in Spain for her novel El mapa de los afectos (The Map of Affections).
Ana Merino was also involved with comics. She was on the Board of Directors for the Center for Cartoon Studies for ten years. She also wrote articles about comics for different magazines. She has organized four comics exhibitions.
Ana Merino currently lives in Iowa City, USA.
