Anales toledanos facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Anales toledanos are like old history books from Toledo, Spain. They tell us about the medieval history of the Kingdom of Toledo. There are three main parts: the primeros (first), segundos (second), and terceros (third). These books are very helpful for historians to learn about the past. Even though they all come from Toledo, they are not directly connected to each other. They just focus on events in the middle of Spain.

Understanding the Anales Toledanos

The Anales toledanos are a set of three important historical records. They were written in Old Spanish. Each part covers different time periods.

  • The Anales toledanos primeros (first) start with the County of Castile. They continue their story up to the year 1219.
  • The Anales toledanos segundos (second) finish their story in 1250.
  • The Anales toledanos terceros (third) go up to 1303, or sometimes even 1391.

These old books are a great way for historians to learn about the past.

Where Did the Information Come From?

The Anales toledanos primeros used other old writings as sources. One main source was the Anales castellanos segundos. The primeros basically translated and continued these writings from 1110 to 1129. Another source they used was the Crónica Cauriense.

The Anales toledanos segundos might have been written by a Morisco. A Morisco was a Muslim who converted to Christianity in Spain. This part of the Anales shows a special interest in Andalusian Muslim events. Its words are sometimes unusual. It also does not mention some big Christian victories.

How They Counted Time

The Anales toledanos segundos counted time using the Anno Hegirae. This is a calendar used in Islamic cultures. The primeros and terceros parts used the Spanish Era to count time. This was a different way of counting years, common in medieval Spain.

Who Published These Books?

The first two parts of the Anales toledanos were put together and published by Francisco de Berganza. He did this in his book Antigüedades de España between 1719 and 1721. Later, Enrique Flórez re-edited them. He made some big changes to the dates. Flórez also published the third part of the Anales.
