Anna first shared her story in the 1920s. She was staying at a hospital in Berlin, Germany. She claimed she escaped from the Bolsheviks in 1918. The Bolsheviks were a political group who took power in Russia. Anastasia's family was lost during this time.

Anna's story was so detailed that many people in Russia believed her. She slowly gained more supporters. However, Anastasia's surviving relatives, the Romanov family, did not believe her. The movie keeps the mystery alive. It never fully tells if Anna really was Anastasia.
