Anastasia Ailamaki is a brilliant computer scientist. She is a professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. There, she leads a special lab called DIAS. This lab focuses on how computers handle huge amounts of information.

Professor Ailamaki also helped start a company called RAW Labs SA. This company creates tools to analyze "big data" very quickly. Before her work in Switzerland, she was a professor at Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science. Her main interest is making computer systems, especially databases, work super fast and efficiently.

Becoming a Computer Expert

Anastasia Ailamaki studied computer science for many years. She first went to the University of Patras. Then, she earned two master's degrees. One was from the Technical University of Crete and the other from the University of Rochester. She finished her studies in 2000. That's when she received her PhD in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Amazing Achievements and Awards

Professor Ailamaki has won many important awards for her work. She has received ten "Best Paper" and "Best Demo" awards. These awards recognize her excellent research and presentations. The European Science Foundation also gave her a "Young Investigator Award."

In 2013, she won a big award called the "ERC Consolidator Award." This was for her project named ViDa. This project helps turn raw computer data into useful information. She is also a respected member of several important groups. These include the IEEE and the ACM. She is also part of Academia Europaea.

Professor Ailamaki has written over 200 articles. These articles are reviewed by other experts before they are published. They appear in top computer science journals. Some of these include the Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research and VLDB.

Top Honors for Her Work

  • ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award (2019): This award is given for new and very important ideas in database systems. These ideas must have a lasting impact.
  • NEMITSAS Prize 2018 in Computer Science: The President of Cyprus gives this prize. It honors scientists whose work is recognized around the world.
  • IEEE Fellow (since 2018): This title recognizes her contributions to database systems. Especially how they work with computer hardware and manage scientific data.
  • ACM Fellow (since 2015): This honor is for her work in designing and building modern database systems.
