Anastasia Ailamaki is a Professor of Computer Sciences in Switzerland. She works at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). She also leads the Data-Intensive Applications and Systems (DIAS) lab there.
Professor Ailamaki is also a co-founder of RAW Labs SA. This is a Swiss company that helps manage and analyze large amounts of data very quickly. Before this, she was a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science.
Her research focuses on database systems and how they work. She studies how databases perform best with modern computer hardware and storage.
Becoming a Computer Scientist
Anastasia Ailamaki studied computer science at the University of Patras. She earned her first master's degree from the Technical University of Crete. Later, she received another diploma from the University of Rochester. In 2000, she completed her Ph.D. in computer science. This was at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Her Amazing Career
Professor Ailamaki has won many awards for her research. She has received ten Best Paper and Best Demo awards. These awards recognize her excellent research papers and demonstrations.
She also received a Young Investigator Award from the European Science Foundation. In 2013, she got an ERC Consolidator Award. This was for her project called ViDa. This project helps turn raw data into useful information.
Anastasia Ailamaki is a respected member of important computer science groups. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and the ACM. She is also a member of Academia Europaea. She helps lead the SIGMOD group. This group focuses on managing data within the Association for Computing Machinery. She is also part of the World Economic Forum's Expert Network.
Professor Ailamaki has written over 200 articles. These articles have been reviewed by other experts. They are published in top journals and conferences. Some of these include Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research, VLDB, SIGMOD, and ACM Transactions on Database Systems.
Awards and Recognition
Professor Ailamaki has received several major honors:
- ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award (2019): This award is given for new and very important ideas. These ideas must help develop or use database systems.
- NEMITSAS Prize 2018 in Computer Science: The President of Cyprus gives this prize. It honors scientists whose work is recognized around the world.
- IEEE Fellow (since 2018): She received this for her work on database systems. This includes how they work with computer hardware and manage scientific data.
- ACM Fellow (since 2015): This award recognizes her contributions. It is for designing, building, and testing modern database systems.
