Anatoly Yegorovich Glushenkov (Russian: Анатолий Егорович Глушенков, November 20, 1942 – January 16, 2018) was a Russian politician. He served as the Governor of Smolensk Oblast from 1993 to 1998. He was the first Governor of Smolensk Oblast to be chosen directly by the people.

Anatoly Glushenkov's Political Journey
Anatoly Glushenkov worked at a refrigerator factory in Smolensk. On April 25, 1993, he was elected Governor of Smolensk Oblast. This made him the first governor of the region to be chosen by a public vote.
Becoming Governor
Glushenkov won against the person who was governor before him, Valery Fateyev. Fateyev had been chosen by President Boris Yeltsin. Glushenkov's victory showed that the people of Smolensk Oblast wanted to choose their own leader.
Serving as Governor
Governor Glushenkov was in office for one term, from 1993 to 1998. In May 1998, he ran for re-election but lost. Alexander Prokhorov became the new governor.
After the Governorship
After leaving the governor's office, Glushenkov moved to Moscow. He was elected to the national Federation Council. This is like a parliament for Russia. In the Federation Council, he led a committee that worked with other countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union. He stopped working in politics in the late 2000s.
Passing Away
Anatoly Glushenkov died in Smolensk on January 16, 2018. He was 76 years old.
