Anau (Turkmen: Änew, Russian: Аннау, romanized: Annau) is a city in Turkmenistan. Until December 20, 2022, it was the capital of Ahal Province. It is located about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southeast of Ashgabat. A major highway connects Anau to Ashgabat.

What's in a Name? The Meaning of Anau
The name Anau comes from the Turkic words Ana ev. This means "Mother's Home".
Anau Today: A Growing City
Anau has been developing with new buildings and projects. In 2003, a new stadium was built in the city. A special museum opened in 2005. This museum is called the National White Wheat Museum. It displays old items found in the area.
Anau officially became a city on February 3, 2008. In 2024, Anau was chosen for a special honor. It was named the "Cultural Capital of the Turkic World". This title was given by TURKSOY, an organization that promotes Turkic culture.
Exploring Anau's Past: Archaeology
Anau is a very old place. The Chalcolithic Anau culture existed around 4500 BC. This culture came after the Neolithic Jeitun culture in Turkmenistan.
Archaeologists have studied Anau for many years. A team from Turkmenistan and the U.S. worked together in the 1990s and 2000s. They dug up many ancient artifacts. Anau was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road. This was a famous trade route. Beautiful painted pottery has been found here.
