2100-year-old human footprints preserved in volcanic mud near the lake in Managua, Nicaragua.

The Ancient footprints of Acahualinca (pronounced ah-kah-wah-LEEN-kah) are amazing fossilized human footprints. You can find them in Managua, Nicaragua. This area is close to the southern shore of Lake Managua. Long ago, this spot was known as "El Cauce."

These footprints were left behind in volcanic ash and mud. They turned into fossils about 2,120 years ago. This happened shortly after a group of up to 15 people walked through the area.

Some people think the group was running away from a volcano erupting. But if you look at the distance between the footprints, it shows they were just walking. There are also fossilized footprints of several animals. However, the animal tracks cross over the human ones. This tells us the animals were not traveling with the people.

Discovering the Acahualinca Museum

The "Museo Sitio Huellas de Acahualinca" is a special museum. It is located west of Managua, in the town of Acahualinca. This museum was started in 1953 by a Nicaraguan scientist named Leonor Martínez.

Later, in 1989, the museum was saved and made new again. This was done with help from "ASDI" and the Historical Museum of Sweden. Besides the famous footprints, the museum has other cool things. You can see a small collection of pottery and other old items. These items come from different archaeological sites in Nicaragua.
