Early Life and Church Work
Anders Wejryd went to Uppsala University to study. He earned his degree in theology in 1972. In the same year, he became a priest in Västerås.
Serving as a Priest
He worked as a priest in several places. These included Västerås, Munktorp, and Arboga. From 1978 to 1985, he was the main priest, called a "vicar," for the Munktorp-Odensvi area. Then, from 1985 to 1987, he was the vicar of Arboga parish. He also led the Köping-Arboga group of churches during this time.
Further Studies and Leadership
In the 1980s, he continued his studies part-time. He researched the missionary work of Nathan Söderblom. However, he had to stop in 1987 because of a new job. From 1987 to 1995, he directed Ersta diakonisällskap. This is a church-linked group in Stockholm that runs a hospital and helps people. After this, he became the Bishop of Växjö in 1995. Then, in 2006, he became the Archbishop of Uppsala.
Becoming Archbishop
Anders Wejryd was the first Archbishop chosen after the Church of Sweden became separate from the government. This happened on January 1, 2000. It meant the Swedish government no longer had a say in who became Archbishop.
The Election Process
The election for Archbishop had several steps. In a first vote on February 8, 2006, he received 33% of the votes. There were 14 candidates in total. In the next round on March 15, six candidates remained. Wejryd got the most votes, 44.6%, but not more than half. So, a final vote was held on March 30. Wejryd won with 176 votes (58.1%) against his opponent, Ragnar Persenius.
Key Moments as Archbishop
Anders Wejryd officially began his role as Archbishop on September 2, 2006. In March 2007, he met with Pope Benedict XVI. This was an important meeting between leaders of different Christian churches. In June 2010, he led the ceremony for a very special event. He officiated at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling.
