History of Anderson Mall
Anderson Mall first opened its doors in March 1972. When it started, it had 43 stores. The main stores, called "anchor stores," were JCPenney, Meyers Arnold, and G.C. Murphy.
Changes and Growth in the 1980s
In 1984, the mall grew bigger and was updated. Two more large stores, Belk (which was called Gallant Belk back then) and Sears, moved into the mall. These stores had previously been in Downtown Anderson. Meyers Arnold was later bought by a company called Uptons. After Uptons closed, that space became a Belk Men's & Home store.
Updates and New Stores in the 2000s
In 2007, the Belk Men's & Home store changed. The men's clothing section moved into the existing Belk store that sold women's and kids' items. The home goods section moved to a different spot next to the main Belk store. These changes made room for a brand new store, Dillard's, which opened in late 2008. Around this time, the entire mall and many other stores were also remodeled.
Ownership Changes and Store Closures
On May 28, 2014, a company called Simon Property Group announced that many of its shopping centers, including Anderson Mall, would become part of a new company. This new company was named Washington Prime Group.
Later, on May 31, 2018, it was announced that Sears would be closing many of its stores across the country. The Sears store at Anderson Mall closed its doors in September 2018.
In June 2020, JCPenney also announced plans to close many stores. However, the JCPenney at Anderson Mall was later removed from the closing list and remains open for shoppers.
Anchor Stores
Anchor stores are usually the largest stores in a mall. They help attract many shoppers. All the anchor stores at Anderson Mall are on one level.
