Anderson Springs is a small community in Lake County, California. It's an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government. It is located at an elevation of about 1,411 feet (430 meters) above sea level.

Where is Anderson Springs?

This community is found in the southwestern part of Lake County, California. It's about 4 miles north of a town called Middletown. It is also about 24 miles from Calistoga.

In 2004, about 403 people lived in Anderson Springs all year round. During busy seasons, like holidays, the population could grow to nearly 1,000 people.

A Look at History

Anderson Springs was discovered in 1873. The Anderson family took ownership of the land then. Soon, the area became a very popular place for people to visit. It was known as a resort because of its natural springs.

By 1914, Miss Barbara Anderson owned the springs. She had a hotel that could host over 100 guests. Eight of the natural springs were actively used by visitors. These springs had different temperatures and mineral contents. Some were cold, while others were quite hot, like the Hot Sulphur and Iron spring, which was 145°F (63°C). People believed the waters had health benefits.

The 2015 Valley Fire

In September 2015, Anderson Springs faced a huge challenge. A large wildfire, known as the Valley Fire, swept through the area. This fire caused a lot of damage. Sadly, some people lost their lives during the fire.

The fire destroyed about 90% of the homes in Anderson Springs. This meant that most families lost their houses and had nowhere to live. Over 1,000 people had to stay in shelters after the fire.

A video was shared widely online showing a family escaping the fire in their car. Fires were burning on both sides of the road as they drove. The family had to leave their home, which was built by their great-grandfather in the 1930s. The mother, Sally Wolf, said they didn't get an evacuation order. They only saw the flames when they rounded a corner near their house.

After the fire, the community quickly started to clean up and rebuild. Many fundraisers were set up on websites like GoFundMe. These efforts helped to collect money to support the rebuilding work. The community showed great strength and teamwork in facing this disaster.
