Exploring Andersonville's Past

Andersonville has a rich history, especially when it comes to education. The community's first school was started in 1830. The land for this school was given by the family who founded the community.
How Andersonville's Schools Grew
The first school was replaced in 1873 by a new one called Big Valley Academy. Local citizens helped pay for this school by buying shares, like investing in a company. In 1898, the school was renamed Andersonville Institute. This happened after a church group bought the building and added high school classes.
Many high school students at Andersonville Institute lived in dormitories because they came from other areas. In 1923, the local school board took over the school. Later, in 1938, high school students moved to a new school in Norris. Andersonville's school then became an elementary school again. The old school building was replaced in 1958 with a new, single-story building. This new building reopened in 1961 as Andersonville Elementary School.
