Andes is a small community in Delaware County, New York. It is known as a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a specific area that the government counts for population.
Andes used to be a "village" with its own local government. In 2010, about 252 people lived there. By 2020, the population was 189. Andes is located along Route 28. It is the main community in the larger town of Andes.
History of Andes
The village of Andes faced a big fire in 1878. This event nearly destroyed the entire community.
Andes is home to some important historical spots. These include the Andes Historic District and the Andes Railroad Station. Both of these places are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their special history and importance.
For many years, Andes was an official village. This meant it had its own local government. However, in 2002, the people living in Andes voted to dissolve the village.
The vote was 81 to 63 in favor of dissolving. On December 31, 2003, the village of Andes officially stopped being an independent village. It became part of the larger town of Andes.
Geography of Andes
The hamlet of Andes is in the northern part of the town of Andes. Its exact location is 42°11′19″N 074°47′09″W / 42.18861°N 74.78583°W. This is about 42 degrees North and 74 degrees West.
The land in Andes is quite high up. Its elevation is about 1,598 feet (487 meters) above sea level. New York Route 28 passes through Andes. This road goes northwest about 12 miles (19 km) to Delhi. Delhi is the main town in Delaware County.
Route 28 also goes southeast about 11 miles (18 km) to Margaretville. The United States Census Bureau says that the Andes CDP covers a total area of about 1.2 square miles (3.1 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no significant water bodies.

In the year 2000, there were 289 people living in Andes. These people lived in 132 households. About 22.7% of these households had children under 18 years old.
The population was spread out by age. About 18.7% of the people were under 18 years old. About 22.8% were 65 years old or older. The average age of people in Andes was 42 years.
