The Andes Museum 1972 (Spanish: Museo Andes 1972) is in The Old City in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.
This museum tells the amazing story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. This was a plane accident that happened in the Andes Mountains in 1972. A group of Uruguayan rugby players, their friends, and family were flying to Chile when their plane crashed. Some of them were part of the Old Christians rugby club.
Their incredible story of survival became famous worldwide. It was shared through books, movies, pictures, and talks. This event inspired the film Alive and many books.
The museum honors the 29 people who died in the accident. It also remembers those who risked their lives to help others. It celebrates the 16 Uruguayans who survived for 72 days in the freezing Andes. They had no food or proper clothes. This museum is a private place. It is recognized for its cultural and tourism importance by the Uruguayan government.
