Andover was once a small community in Placer County, California. It is no longer an active town or village. Andover was important because it was located along the very first transcontinental railroad. This railroad was built by the Central Pacific Railroad. Later, it became part of the Southern Pacific Railroad and is now the Union Pacific railroad.
Andover was about 11.5 miles (18.5 km) west of Martis Peak. It was located at a high elevation, about 6,302 feet (1,921 meters) above sea level.
How Andover Got Its Name
Andover was named by someone who worked for the railroad. This official decided to name the settlement after his own hometown. His hometown was Andover, Massachusetts. This was a common way to name new places along the railroad lines.
