Life Story of a Publisher
Early Life and Moving to Britain
André Deutsch was born in Budapest, Hungary, on November 15, 1917. His father was a dentist. André went to school in Budapest and later in Vienna, Austria.
Because he was Jewish, André had to leave Austria in 1939. This was due to an event called the Anschluss, when Germany took control of Austria. He moved to Britain to find safety. In London, he first worked at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
During World War II, Hungary joined forces with Germany. Because André was from Hungary, he was briefly held as an "enemy alien" in 1941. This meant he was from a country that Britain was fighting against.
Starting in Publishing
André learned about the publishing business from Francis Aldor. They had met while André was held on the Isle of Man. After a few months, André moved to another publishing company, Nicholson & Watson.
After the war, André started his first company, Allan Wingate. But he later left this company.
Founding André Deutsch Limited
In 1952, André Deutsch started his own publishing company, André Deutsch Limited. This company became very important, even though it was small.
His company published books by many famous writers. These included Jack Kerouac, Wole Soyinka, Norman Mailer, V. S. Naipaul, Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood, and John Updike. He also published popular children's authors like Michael Rosen and Quentin Blake.
André Deutsch was known for his dedication to books. He was appointed a CBE in 1989. This is a special award from the British Queen.
André Deutsch passed away in London on April 11, 2000, at the age of 82.
What is an Imprint?
Today, the name "André Deutsch" is an imprint of the Carlton Publishing Group. An imprint is like a brand name used by a larger publishing company. It means the books are still published under the André Deutsch name, but by a different owner.
