André Holland (born December 28, 1979) is an American actor. He is well-known for his role as Kevin in the 2016 film Moonlight, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture.
Holland has acted in many films, TV shows, and plays. He played Dr. Algernon Edwards in the Cinemax series The Knick (2014–2015) and Matt Miller in the FX series American Horror Story: Roanoke (2016). He also played important historical figures like politician Andrew Young in the 2014 film Selma and sportswriter Wendell Smith in the 2013 film 42. On stage, he starred in August Wilson's play Jitney on Broadway in 2017. He also had a main role in the 2020 Netflix musical drama series The Eddy.

About André Holland
His Early Life and School
André Holland was born on December 28, 1979, in Bessemer, Alabama, where he grew up. He went to John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham. When he was eleven, he performed for the first time in a play called Oliver! at the Birmingham Summerfest Theatre.
He later attended Florida State University and studied in London for a while. In 2006, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University.
Starting His Acting Journey
Holland's first TV appearance was in an episode of Law & Order in 2006. Around this time, he also started acting more often on stage. In 2006, he played three different characters in the play Blue Door. A critic from The New York Times praised his performance.
In 2008, he played Eric in the play Wig Out! and got his first movie role in the sports drama Sugar. The next year, he acted in The Brother/Sister Plays. In 2010, he won an award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the play The Whipping Man.
In 2011, he played Julian "Fitz" Fitzgerald in several episodes of the NBC sitcom Friends with Benefits. In 2013, he played Wendell Smith in the film 42, which was about baseball legend Jackie Robinson. In 2014, he played Andrew Young in Ava DuVernay's historical film Selma. For this role, he was nominated for an award.
From 2014 to 2015, he had a supporting role alongside Clive Owen in the Cinemax drama series The Knick.
Moonlight and Beyond
In 2016, André Holland became widely recognized for his role as Kevin in Barry Jenkins' drama film Moonlight. His acting in the film received great praise and many awards. Moonlight won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Many film critics, including those from Rolling Stone and GQ, said Holland was a "standout" in the movie. As part of the film's cast, he was nominated for an award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards. He also received nominations for Best Supporting Actor from other film groups.
After the success of Moonlight, Holland continued to act in important projects. In 2017, he played Youngblood in August Wilson's play Jitney on Broadway. He then appeared in Ava DuVernay's fantasy adventure film A Wrinkle in Time, which came out in March 2018.
Later in 2018, he played the main character Henry Matthew Deaver in the Hulu series Castle Rock. Critics gave his performance in this series positive reviews. Since July 2018, he has also starred in a play called Othello at Shakespeare's Globe theater. In 2018, he also directed a play for the first time, called Dutch Masters.
Holland starred in Duke Johnson's 2025 film The Actor, which is based on the novel Memory.
