Andrés Hernández Ros (born July 30, 1948 – died June 26, 2016) was an important Spanish politician. He was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Hernández Ros is best known for being the very first President of the Region of Murcia. He held this top leadership role from July 1982 until March 1984. Before that, he was the President of the Regional Council of Murcia, which was the government before Murcia became an official autonomous region.

Who Was Andrés Hernández Ros?

Andrés Hernández Ros was born in Guadalupe, Murcia, Spain. He studied to become a chemist. In 1974, he decided to join the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This was a big step in his political career. By 1977, he became a secretary for the party.

His Early Political Journey

In 1978, Hernández Ros was chosen as the party's Secretary General. This happened after his party joined with another group, the People's Socialist Party. This showed how important he was becoming in the PSOE.

Leading Murcia's Government

In 1979, Andrés Hernández Ros was chosen to run for President of the Regional Council of Murcia. This council was the main governing body for Murcia before it became an independent region. He won the election and became President of the Regional Council on May 5, 1979. He served in this role until July 1982.

Becoming the First President

In July 1982, the Region of Murcia officially became an autonomous community. This meant it had its own government. Andrés Hernández Ros then became the first-ever President of the Region of Murcia. This was a very important job, like being the head of the region's government. He held this position from July 1982 until March 9, 1984.

Leaving Politics

Andrés Hernández Ros resigned from his role as President of the Region on March 9, 1984. This decision came after some issues arose. Even after resigning, he kept his seat in the Regional Assembly of Murcia. He stayed there until 1987, when he decided to retire from politics completely.

Life After Politics

After leaving politics, Hernández Ros moved to Chile in 1988 with his second wife, María Elena Sarmiento. He started new businesses there. He owned a sawmill near Temuco and also ran a Spanish restaurant in Santiago, Chile. He and his second wife separated in 1994.

He only returned to politics briefly one time in 1994. This was to attend a meeting to support Prime Minister Felipe González. In 2012, Andrés Hernández Ros received a special award. It was called the Gold Medal of the Region of Murcia. This is the highest honor given by the government of Murcia.

Andrés Hernández Ros passed away on June 26, 2016, when he was 67 years old.
