Andrass Samuelsen (Danish: Andreas Samuelsen) was an important politician from the Faroe Islands. He was born on July 1, 1873, and passed away on June 30, 1954. He is famous for being the very first Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. This happened after the Faroe Islands gained more control over their own government in 1948. He was a member of the Union Party.

Andrass Samuelsen: First Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands
Andrass Samuelsen was a key figure in Faroese history. He led the government during a very important time. The Faroe Islands became more self-governing in 1948. This new freedom meant they needed their own leader. Andrass Samuelsen was chosen for this big role.
Early Life and Family
Andrass Samuelsen was born in Haldarsvík, a village in the Faroe Islands. His parents were Katrina Malena Mikkelsen and Sámal Joensen. He later married Beata Emilia Lindenskov from Tórshavn, the capital city.
A Long Political Career
Andrass Samuelsen spent many years working in politics. He was a member of the Faroese parliament, called the Løgting, for a very long time. He served there from 1906 until 1950.
He also worked in the Danish parliament. He was a member of the Folketing (the main Danish parliament) from 1913 to 1916 and again from 1918 to 1939. He also served in the Landsting, another part of the Danish parliament, from 1917 to 1918.
From 1924 to 1948, Andrass Samuelsen was the leader of the Union Party. This party believed in keeping close ties with Denmark.
Leading the Faroe Islands
In 1948, the Faroe Islands gained more self-rule. This was thanks to a law called the Heimastýrislógin. This law brought back the position of Prime Minister, which had not existed since 1816. Andrass Samuelsen became the first person to hold this important job. He served as Prime Minister from 1948 to 1950. He passed away on June 30, 1954, just one day before his 81st birthday.
His Family's Legacy
Andrass Samuelsen's family continued to be involved in public life.
- His son, Georg Lindenskov Samuelsen (1910–1997), was the publisher of the newspaper Dimmalætting for nearly 50 years.
- His granddaughter, Lisbeth L. Petersen, became one of the first women to be a politician in the Faroe Islands.
- His grandson, Eilif Samuelsen, is also a Faroese politician.
