Andre Leander Arendse was born on 27 June 1967. He is a famous South African former soccer player. He played as a goalkeeper, stopping shots from going into the net.
After his playing days, Andre became an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for Supersport United. He has also worked as a TV presenter for SuperSport, sharing his knowledge of the game.
Andre Arendse's Club Career
Andre Arendse started his professional soccer journey in 1991. He played for a team called Cape Town Spurs. In 1992, he was loaned to another Cape Town team, Santos. A loan means he played for Santos for a short time before returning to Cape Town Spurs.
Andre also played for teams in England, like Oxford United and Fulham. Back in South Africa, he played for Santos again, Mamelodi Sundowns, and SuperSport United.
He stopped playing professional soccer in 2009. In his last year, he won the Premier Soccer League title with SuperSport United. This was a great way to end his career!
In May 2013, Andre made a surprise return to the field. He played as an emergency goalkeeper for Bidvest Wits. This happened because many of their regular goalkeepers were injured. At 45 years old, he became the oldest player in the history of the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Playing for South Africa (Bafana Bafana)
Andre Arendse proudly played for the South Africa team, known as Bafana Bafana. He played 67 matches for his country. His first game was in 1995.
He was chosen for the 1998 FIFA World Cup squad, but sadly, he got injured and couldn't play. He was also the main goalkeeper for South Africa at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
One of his biggest achievements was being the starting goalkeeper when South Africa won the 1996 African Cup of Nations. This was a huge victory for the country! He stopped playing international soccer in 2004.
Andre Arendse: From Player to Coach
After his successful playing career, Andre Arendse moved into coaching. In April 2022, he became the interim coach for Supersport United. An interim coach is someone who takes charge temporarily.
Later, the club hired Gavin Hunt as the permanent head coach. Andre stayed on as an assistant coach. The club explained that Andre didn't have all the necessary coaching qualifications to be the main coach, especially if the team played in big international competitions.
