Andre Bernard Mathis, born in 1980, is an American lawyer. He is currently a judge on a special court called the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. This court helps decide important legal cases in the United States.

Education
Andre Mathis went to the University of Memphis. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003. Later, in 2007, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. This is a special degree that allows someone to become a lawyer.
Career
After finishing law school, Mathis began working at a law firm in Memphis, Tennessee. He worked as a lawyer helping people who were accused of crimes. He also worked with the Tennessee Innocence Project. This project helps people who might have been wrongly convicted.
Mathis also served on different committees. These committees help choose judges and make sure lawyers follow the rules. For example, he was part of a group that helped pick judges for the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. He also helped evaluate federal defenders.
In 2020, Mathis joined another law firm in Memphis called Butler Snow LLP.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On November 17, 2021, President Joe Biden announced that he wanted to nominate Andre Mathis to be a judge. This would make him a United States circuit judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Judge Bernice B. Donald was leaving her position, and Mathis was chosen to take her place.
To become a federal judge, a person must be approved by the United States Senate. The Senate holds hearings where they ask questions about the person's experience. On January 12, 2022, a hearing was held for Mathis.
After the hearing, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to approve his nomination. On September 8, 2022, the full United States Senate voted to confirm him. He became the first Black man to be confirmed to any federal circuit court in many years. He officially started his job as a judge on September 27, 2022.
