Andrea Ruth Mitchell (born 7 February 1956 – died 4 April 2020) was an Australian politician. She was a member of the Legislative Assembly in Western Australia. She represented the area of Kingsley from 2008 to 2017. Andrea Mitchell also served as a minister in the government led by Colin Barnett starting in March 2016.

Early Life and Education

Andrea Mitchell was born in Brisbane, Queensland. Her family moved to Perth when she was 13 years old. She went to Melville Senior High School there.

Later, she studied at the University of Western Australia. She earned a degree in Physical Education. She also received a diploma to become a teacher.

Career in Sport and Education

Andrea Mitchell worked as a physical education teacher for 15 years. She taught at different high schools in Perth. After teaching, she joined the state government's Department of Sport and Recreation. She started as a consultant and later took on management roles.

She was also very involved in tennis. She was the president of Tennis West from 1996 to 2008. She also served as a director for Tennis Australia and the Hopman Cup. In 2000, she received the Australian Sports Medal for her contributions to sport.

Political Career

Andrea Mitchell decided to enter politics. She ran for the Liberal Party in the area of Kingsley. This was during the 2008 state election. She won the seat, defeating the Labor Party member, Judy Hughes.

She became even more popular in the 2013 election. She won with a larger number of votes. This made Kingsley a very safe seat for the Liberal Party. Andrea Mitchell gave her first speech in the Legislative Assembly on 6 November 2008.

Becoming a Minister

After the 2013 election, she became a parliamentary secretary. In 2014, she helped pass the Mental Health Act. This law was important for mental health services.

In March 2016, Andrea Mitchell became a minister. She took over from Helen Morton. She was appointed Minister for Child Protection. She also became Minister for Mental Health.

End of Political Career

In the 2017 State Election, Andrea Mitchell narrowly lost her seat. She lost to Jessica Stojkovski from the Labor Party. The difference was only 307 votes. This made Kingsley one of the closest election results in Western Australia.

Andrea Mitchell passed away on 4 April 2020. She had a long-term heart condition.
