Andreas Bakkerud's Racing Journey
Andreas Bakkerud has had an exciting career in rallycross. He started in the FIA European Rallycross Championship (ERX) in the Super1600 category. He won this championship twice in a row, in 2011 and 2012.
In 2013, he moved up to the Supercar class in the European Rallycross Championship. He drove a private Citroën DS3 car. That year, he finished fourth overall and won two races.
Joining the World Championship
In 2014, Bakkerud joined the FIA World Rallycross Championship (World RX). He drove a Fiesta for the Ford-supported Olsbergs MSE team. He won two races and finished second three times. This helped him finish fifth in the overall standings.
The next year, in 2015, he continued to do well. He won one race and earned three podium finishes. A podium finish means he placed in the top three. He ended the season in fourth place in the championship.
Racing with Ken Block
In 2016, Bakkerud joined the American team Hoonigan Racing Division. His teammate was the famous driver Ken Block. That year was very successful for Bakkerud. He won three races and had six podium finishes. He ended up in third place in the 2016 World Rallycross Supercar standings.
On June 12, 2016, Andreas Bakkerud made history in Hell, Norway. He completely dominated the race weekend. He won all four of his qualifying races, which no driver had ever done before. Then, he won his semi-final and the final race. This was the first win for the new Ford Focus RS RX rallycross car. It was also the first World RX win for Hoonigan Racing Division. Plus, it was the first time a Norwegian driver won the Norway round of the World Championship.
After the 2017 season, Hoonigan Racing decided to leave the sport. Bakkerud then needed to find a new team.
Moving to EKS Audi Sport
On January 31, 2018, Bakkerud announced he would join the EKS Audi Sport team. He drove an Audi S1 EKS RX quattro car. He finished third in the 2018 season. He had six podium finishes that year. However, EKS Audi Sport also decided to leave the championship after that season.
Bakkerud continued to race in World RX in 2019. He teamed up with Liam Doran in the Monster Energy RX Cartel team. They used the same Audi cars. Bakkerud achieved six podium finishes during the season. He tied for points with another driver, Timmy Hansen. But he was ranked second because Hansen had more wins.
