Andreas Samaris (born June 13, 1989) is a Greek professional football player. He played as a midfielder, helping his team control the middle of the field. He last played for Coritiba, a club in Brazil.

Samaris became well-known after winning the Greek league with Olympiacos in 2014. After that, he moved to Benfica in Portugal. With Benfica, he won many titles, including four Primeira Liga championships.

He also played for the Greek national team from 2013 to 2019. He even represented Greece at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Club Career

Playing in Greece

Andreas Samaris started his football journey in 2006 with Panachaiki, a team in Greece. He played 37 games for them and scored three goals. In 2010, he moved to another Greek club, Panionios.

In 2012, Samaris joined Olympiacos, one of Greece's biggest clubs. However, he spent that first season back on loan at Panionios. He returned to Olympiacos in 2013. On November 23, 2013, he scored his first goal for Olympiacos in a 4–1 win. He played 38 games that season and scored four goals, helping Olympiacos win their 41st league title.

Moving to Benfica

On August 22, 2014, Samaris made a big move. He joined Benfica, the champions of Portugal, signing a five-year contract. Benfica paid €10 million for him. He played his first game for Benfica on September 12.

After his first year, Samaris shared that learning Portuguese was a bit tough. He said it was important to learn the language to connect with his teammates. It also helped him understand his coach's plans better.

On August 29, 2015, Samaris scored his first goal in the Portuguese league. It was a great shot from outside the box. On April 1, 2016, he scored another goal from a free kick. On March 4, 2017, he played his 100th game for Benfica. That season, he also helped Benfica win the Taça de Portugal cup.

On March 11, 2019, Samaris scored a fantastic volley goal. This was his first goal of the 2018–19 season. In May, he signed a new contract with Benfica until 2023. However, in July 2021, he started training with Benfica's B team. He was not part of the main team's plans. On August 31, 2021, he agreed to end his contract with the club.

Later Clubs

After leaving Benfica, Samaris joined Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands on November 19, 2021. He played 20 games for them. He made his debut on November 27, 2021.

On August 29, 2022, Samaris returned to Portugal. He signed a one-season contract with Rio Ave. He played 24 games for the club.

His most recent move was on August 27, 2023. He signed a one-year deal with Coritiba, a Brazilian club. He played 4 games for them.

International Career

Andreas Samaris also played for his country, Greece. He was part of the Greece under-19 team. He played his first game for the senior Greek national side in October 2013. This was in a qualifier match against Liechtenstein.

After a strong season with Olympiacos, Samaris was chosen for Greece's 23-man squad. This team would play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

On June 24, 2014, Samaris played in his first World Cup match against Ivory Coast. He scored the first goal in that game, helping Greece win 2–1. He came into the game early because another player was injured. Samaris retired from the Greek national team in 2019.
