Vitória Futebol Clube, also known as Vitória de Setúbal, is a professional football club from Setúbal, Portugal. The team used to play in the Primeira Liga, which is the top football league in Portugal. Their home stadium is the Estádio do Bonfim.

Currently, due to some financial challenges, they are playing in the lower divisions of the Setúbal FA district championship. The club started out as Sport Victoria, growing from a smaller team called Bonfim Foot-Ball Club.

Vitória de Setúbal has won several important trophies in Portugal. They have won the Taça de Portugal three times and the Taça da Liga once. On the international stage, they have won a Small Club World Cup and an Iberian Cup. This makes them one of the most successful clubs in Portugal's history.

Club History

Evolution of Vitória Futebol Clube's league performances since 1938

Vitória de Setúbal has a long and interesting history in Portuguese football. They were one of the teams that played in the very first Campeonato da Liga season in 1934–35.

Winning the Taça de Portugal

The club won its first major trophy in 1964–65. They won the Taça de Portugal by beating Benfica 3–1 in the final. The next year, they lost the final to Braga. But in 1967, Vitória won the Cup again. They defeated Académica de Coimbra 3–2 after extra time.

Playing in Europe

Vitória also played in European competitions. In 1965-66, they played in the European Cup-Winners' Cup. They lost to AGF Aarhus. In 1967-68, they played in the same competition again. This time, they lost to Bayern Munich.

The team also competed in the Fairs Cup in 1969–70. They managed to knock out Liverpool in the second round. However, they were later eliminated by Hertha BSC.

Top League Finishes

In the 1973–74 season, Vitória de Setúbal had a great year. They finished in third place in the league. They were only four points behind the champions, Sporting CP.

More Cup Success

After some years of moving between leagues, Vitória returned to the top Portuguese league in 2004–05. In that same season, they won their third Taça de Portugal. They beat Benfica 2–1 in the final on May 29. A few months later, on August 13, they played Benfica again in the Super Cup. Benfica won that match 1–0. In 2006, Vitória reached the cup final again but lost to FC Porto.

Winning the Taça da Liga

On March 22, 2008, Vitória won the Carlsberg Cup for the first time. In the final, they played against Sporting. The game ended in a draw, so it went to penalties. Their goalkeeper, Eduardo, saved three penalties, helping Vitória win! Ten years later, in 2018, they played Sporting in the final again. This time, Sporting won on penalties.

Recent Challenges

In 2019–20, Vitória managed to avoid being relegated from the top league by just one point. However, due to serious financial problems, they could not get a license to play in the top two leagues. Because of this, they were moved down to the third-tier league, the Campeonato de Portugal.

Vitória was promoted after one season. But they stayed in the third division because a new league, Liga 3, was created. Their financial situation had improved, so they were allowed to register. In 2022–23, the team was relegated again to the now fourth-tier Campeonato de Portugal. This happened on the very last day of the season.

In June and July 2024, Vitória de Setúbal faced more challenges. They did not qualify for Liga 3 or the Campeonato de Portugal. They also could not get a license for the 2024/25 season in the third level. This meant they were moved down to the Second Division of AF Setúbal, which is the sixth level of football in Portugal.
