Club History and Achievements
Vitória de Setúbal was one of the first teams to play in the top Portuguese league. This was in the very first Campeonato da Liga season in 1934–35.
Winning the Taça de Portugal
The club won its first major trophy in 1964–65. They beat Benfica 3–1 in the final of the Taça de Portugal. The next year, they lost the final to Braga. But in 1967, Vitória won the cup again. They defeated Académica de Coimbra 3–2 after extra time.
Playing in European Competitions
Vitória de Setúbal also played in European tournaments. They competed in the European Cup-Winners' Cup in 1965-66 and 1967-68. They also played in the Fairs Cup in 1969–70. In that tournament, they even managed to knock out the famous English team Liverpool.
Strong League Performances
In the 1973–74 season, Vitória de Setúbal had a great league run. They finished in third place, just four points behind the champions, Sporting CP.
More Cup Success in the 2000s
After some ups and downs, Vitória returned to the top league for the 2004–05 season. In the same season, they won their third Taça de Portugal. They beat Benfica 2–1 in the final on May 29. A few months later, they played Benfica again in the Super Cup, but lost 1–0. In 2006, they reached the cup final again but lost to FC Porto.
Winning the Taça da Liga
On March 22, 2008, Vitória de Setúbal won the Taça da Liga for the first time. They beat Sporting CP in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw. Their goalkeeper, Eduardo, saved three penalties! Ten years later, in the 2018 final, they faced Sporting again. This time, Sporting won the penalty shootout.
Recent Challenges and Comebacks
In 2019–20, Vitória managed to avoid being relegated from the top league. However, due to some money problems, they were moved down to the third-tier Campeonato de Portugal.
The team was promoted after just one season. But they stayed in the third division because a new league, Liga 3, was created. This was allowed because their money situation had improved. In 2022–23, the team was unfortunately relegated to the fourth-tier Campeonato de Portugal on the last day of the season.
Home Stadium: Estádio do Bonfim
Vitória de Setúbal plays its home games at the Estádio do Bonfim. This stadium opened in 1962. It can hold 15,497 fans.
