Andrew Auld (September 8, 1799 – October 26, 1873) was born in Linlithgow, Scotland. He was a skilled carpenter who worked on ships. Andrew Auld arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1816.

He became a very close friend of Captain Alexander Adams. Captain Adams was important because he led the navy for Kamehameha I, the first king of a united Hawaii. Andrew Auld and Captain Adams were friends for 40 years. They are even buried next to each other in Nuʻuanu at the Oʻahu Cemetery. Their shared tombstone has a special saying in the old Scots dialect: "Twa croanies frae the land of heather / Are sleepin' here in death th'gether." This means "Two friends from Scotland / Are sleeping here together in death."

Andrew Auld had several children. His son, William Auld, became a very important person in Hawaii's history.

William Auld: A Key Figure

William Auld was an aide, or helper, to King Kalākaua. King Kalākaua was a later ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom. In 1859, William Auld married Mary Adams. She was the daughter of Captain Alexander Adams, Andrew's best friend. This marriage connected the two families even more closely.

William Auld was also a successful businessman in Honolulu. He owned several companies. Today, Auld Lane in Honolulu is named after him.

Standing Up for Hawaii

William Auld was a member of a group called the Hui Aloha ʻAina. This group worked to protect Hawaii's independence. He was one of three people chosen to take a very large petition to Washington D.C. This petition was a formal request signed by many people. It protested against the United States taking over Hawaii, a process known as annexation.
