Andrew Cibej has family roots from Italy and Australia. His last name, Cibej, is pronounced "Chee-bay." It comes from Slovenia, but his dad's family is from a part of Italy called Friuli.
Andrew was born in Sydney, Australia. He grew up in a suburb called Gladesville. He went to Newington College from 1982 to 1987. In 1988, he started studying law at the University of Sydney. However, he left Australia for Canada before finishing his degree.
Becoming a Chef
In Canada, Andrew worked in a pizza shop. When he returned to Sydney, he worked in the kitchen at a famous restaurant called Tetsuya's.
In 1999, he went to Italy. He ran a restaurant near Florence for two years. After that, he worked in Rome for six months. He came back to Australia in 2002.
Three years later, in 2005, he opened his own restaurant called Vini in Surry Hills, Sydney. His next restaurant was Berta in Alberta Street, Sydney.
Around 2018, these restaurants were either closed or sold. In 2010, Andrew opened 121BC in Sydney. This was a cantina and enoteca, which means it served food and wine. In 2013, he opened another 121BC in Hong Kong. In 2017, he opened Bacco in Ash Street, Sydney.
