Andrew Han Jingtao (simplified Chinese: 韩井涛; traditional Chinese: 韓井濤; pinyin: Hán Jǐngtāo) was an important Chinese Catholic leader. He was born on July 26, 1921, and passed away on December 30, 2020. He served as a Bishop in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sipingjie from 1982 until his death.
Early Life and Priesthood
Andrew Han Jingtao was born in Jilin, China. This was on July 26, 1921. After finishing his studies, he became a priest. He was ordained on December 14, 1947.
Challenges and Teaching
During a time when the government was very strict about religion, Andrew Han Jingtao faced difficulties. He was held by the government for a period. He was later released in 1980. This happened when the country became more open.
After his release, he became a professor. He taught Latin and Greek culture. He worked at Northeastern University in Changchun. He taught there until he retired in 1987.
Becoming a Bishop
In 1982, Andrew Han Jingtao was chosen to be a Bishop. This appointment was kept quiet at the time. Four years later, on May 6, 1986, his ordination ceremony was also held privately.
He was a strong supporter of Catholic groups. He supported the Legions of Mary. He also started a group called the Women's Congregation of Mount Calvary.
Bishop Han Jingtao worked to bring different Catholic groups together. He hoped for peace between them.
