Andrew Hugine Jr. is an American educator and university leader. He served as the 11th president of Alabama A&M University. He started this important role on June 26, 2009. His contract was extended until 2023. Before joining Alabama A&M, Hugine was the president of South Carolina State University, where he had also studied.

Early Life and Education
Andrew Hugine Jr. was born on June 21, 1949. His hometown was Green Pond, South Carolina. This is a small community in Colleton County. His parents were Andrew and Irene Short Hugine Sr.
He went to public schools in Colleton County. Later, he attended South Carolina State University. There, he earned two degrees in mathematics. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees. After that, he continued his studies at Michigan State University. He earned a PhD in Higher Education and Institutional Research.

Hugine started his career as a math teacher. He taught at Beaufort High School in Beaufort, South Carolina. He also worked at Michigan State University. There, he was a graduate teaching assistant and an assistant professor.
Leadership at South Carolina State University
Hugine worked at South Carolina State University for 30 years. During this time, he held many different jobs. He was a director for special programs. He also worked as a research fellow. He became Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. He was also a professor of mathematics.
From 2003 to 2008, Hugine became the 9th President of the university. As president, he helped build a large new student housing building. He also started plans for a new School of Engineering building.
Leading Alabama A&M University
In 2009, Hugine became the 11th President of Alabama A&M University. One of his first big tasks was to fix a problem. The university was on "probationary status." This meant it had to meet certain standards. Hugine quickly helped the university get off probation. This happened in December 2009.
During his time at Alabama A&M, Hugine achieved many things. He signed important agreements. One was with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Another was with NASA and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. He also signed an agreement with Nanjing Forestry University in China. This helped create a Confucius Institute at Alabama A&M. He also started new degree programs. These programs were offered at Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama.
Hugine announced his retirement on December 2, 2020. His last day as president was December 31, 2021.

Andrew Hugine Jr. is married to Abbiegail Hamilton Hugine. She was also an educator and a school principal. They have been married for 45 years. They have one adult son, Andrew Hugine III.
