Andrew Trewe was an important person in the city of York, England, a long time ago. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for York. This means he was chosen to represent the people of York in the Parliament of England. He held this job from 1593 to 1601.

Andrew Trewe's Life and Work

Andrew Trewe was the son of Richard and Jennet Trewe. His father, Richard, was a cordwainer, which means he made things from leather, especially shoes.

Family Life

In 1556, Andrew married Jane Edwyne. They were married at St Martins, Micklegate, a church in York. Andrew and Jane had three children: one son named William, and two daughters. Andrew was also involved with his local church. He was a churchwarden at St Martins in 1558. A churchwarden helps manage the church's property and finances.

Becoming a Leader in York

Before he became an MP, Andrew Trewe was very active in the city of York. In 1556, he became a freeman of the city. This was an important title that gave him certain rights and privileges, like being able to trade freely.

He held many different important jobs in York:

  • Chamberlain (1566–1567): A chamberlain helped manage the city's money.
  • Sheriff (1568–1569): A sheriff was a top official who helped keep law and order.
  • Alderman (1581): An alderman was a senior member of the city council.
  • Lord Mayor (1585–1586): This was the highest position in the city government. He was like the city's main leader.
  • High Commissioner for York (1599): This role involved special duties for the city.

Andrew as a Merchant

Andrew Trewe was also a merchant. This means he bought and sold goods to make a living. He traded by ship across the sea. His trade routes went between Denmark and Sweden, and into the Baltic Sea. This trading helped him earn money.

He used his money to lease different properties in York. One of these was the Castle Mills. He also lived in a building on Ouse Bridge. He leased land behind his home, which became known as Fish Landing. Later, he also leased land in Haymonger Lane. This lane is now called Church Lane, near Low Ousegate. Even with these properties, his wealth was described as "modest," meaning it was not extremely large.

Other Interesting Facts

Not much else is known about Andrew Trewe's daily life. However, there are a few interesting stories. Because he was a well-known merchant, the city council gave him a special task. They asked him to get back copies of all the plays that belonged to the city. These plays were being kept by the Archbishop of York. This shows he was trusted with important city matters.
