Andrey Nikolayevich Sakharov (Russian: Андрей Николаевич Сахаров; 2 June 1930 – 26 June 2019) was an important Russian historian. He was known for his views on early Russian history. He believed that the ancient Russian state developed mostly from within Russia, not mainly from outside influences like the Norse people. This idea is called "anti-Normanism."

A Historian's Life

Andrey Sakharov was born in a town called Kulebaki. He dedicated his life to studying and writing about history.

Leading a History Institute

In 1993, he became the Director of the Russian History Institute. This institute is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is a very important place for historical research in Russia.

As director, Sakharov had strong ideas about how Russian history should be studied. He believed in certain ways of understanding the past. This sometimes led to disagreements with other historians. He retired from his role in 2010.

Working on Historical Accuracy

From 2009 to 2012, Sakharov was part of a special group. This group was called the Presidential Commission. Its goal was to make sure Russian history was taught accurately. They wanted to prevent any false information about Russia's past.

His Important Books

Andrey Sakharov wrote many books and articles. These books are called monographs when they are long and detailed studies.

Studying Ancient Diplomacy

Two of his most famous books are about diplomacy in early Russia. Diplomacy is how countries talk and make agreements with each other.

  • The Diplomacy of Ancient Rus was published in 1980.
  • Its follow-up, The Diplomacy of Svyatoslav, came out in 1982.

Because of his deep studies into early medieval diplomacy, Sakharov was recognized. In 1991, he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This means he was a respected scholar connected to the Academy.
