Kids Encyclopedia Facts

André Lalande (born July 19, 1867, in Dijon, France – died November 15, 1964, in Asnières, France) was an important French philosopher. He taught philosophy at the University of Paris starting in 1904.

When he was a student in 1883-1884, one of his teachers was the famous sociologist Émile Durkheim. Lalande really admired Durkheim. His notes from these classes were later used to publish a book in 2004 called Durkheim's Philosophy Lectures.

Lalande wrote his main university paper, called a doctoral thesis, about the idea of things breaking down compared to the idea of things evolving. In 1901, he helped start the French Philosophical Society. This group brought together philosophers to discuss ideas.
