Andrés Martínez Trueba (born February 11, 1884 – died December 19, 1959) was a key political figure in Uruguay. He served as the President of Uruguay from 1951 to 1955.

Early Life and Education

Andrés Martínez Trueba was born in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. He grew up in the Peñarol area of the city. He studied at the university and earned a degree in pharmaceutical chemistry. This means he learned about making medicines and chemicals.

Career Before Presidency

Martínez Trueba chose a career as an army officer. He was also a member of the Colorado Party. This political party was very powerful and governed Uruguay for many years.

He held important public jobs before becoming president. From 1947 to 1948, he was the Mayor of Montevideo. This role is similar to being the head of a city government. After that, from 1948 to 1950, he was the president of the main bank of Uruguay, called Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay.

Time as President of Uruguay

Andrés Martínez Trueba became President of Uruguay in 1951. He took over from Luis Batlle. He was part of the Colorado Party. Alfeo Brum was the Vice President of Uruguay during his time in office.

In 1952, a new Constitution was put into place. This new set of rules changed how the government worked. It created something called the National Council of Government. This council was a group of leaders who governed the country together. Martínez Trueba became the head of this council and led it until 1955.

After his term, Luis Batlle took over as the President of the National Council of Government.
