Andrew Whitfield (born October 17, 1971 – died September 11, 2011) was an actor from Wales. He became very well known for playing the main character in the TV show Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
Early Life and Acting Career
Andy Whitfield moved to Bull Bay, Wales, with his family in 1976. He went to local schools until he was 18 years old. After that, he studied civil engineering at Sheffield Hallam University in England. In 1999, he moved to Australia to work as an engineer. Later, he settled in Sydney.
He started acting in Australian TV shows. Some of these included Opening Up, All Saints, The Strip, Packed to the Rafters, and McLeod's Daughters.
Andy got his first big acting role in the Australian movie Gabriel in 2007. He also starred in the TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand in 2010. This show was filmed in New Zealand. Andy also appeared in an Australian thriller movie called The Clinic.
In 2010, Andy Whitfield worked with Freddie Wong to make a short video for YouTube. It was called "Time Crisis" and was based on a video game. Andy also had a small voice role in the show Spartacus: Gods of the Arena in 2011.
A documentary film called Be Here Now was released in 2015. It shows Andy and his family's journey as he went through treatment for his illness. This film was later available on Netflix as Be Here Now: The Andy Whitfield Story.
Family Life
Andy Whitfield married Vashti Whitfield, who makes documentaries, in 2001. They had two children together, named Jesse Red and Indigo Sky.
Illness and Passing
In March 2010, Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with a serious illness called non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He started treatment right away in New Zealand. Because of this, the filming of the second season of Spartacus: Vengeance was delayed.
While waiting for Andy to recover, the TV channel Starz made a six-part prequel series called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. Andy only had a short voice role in this prequel.
In June 2010, he was declared free of the illness. However, a check-up in September 2010 showed that the illness had returned. Because of this, Andy had to leave his role as Spartacus. Another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, took over the role.
Andy Whitfield passed away from non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Sydney, Australia, on September 11, 2011. This was about 18 months after he was first diagnosed.
