Anenecuilco is a town in Morelos, Mexico. Its name comes from the Nahuatl words meaning "Place where the water twists back and forth." As of 2021, about 11,227 people live there.

Anenecuilco is famous for being the birthplace of Emiliano Zapata. He was a very important leader during the Mexican Revolution. Today, you can visit a museum in his childhood home in the town.

History of Anenecuilco

Ancient Times

Anenecuilco is first mentioned in an old book called the Codex Mendoza. This book shows that Anenecuilco was part of the Huaxtepec area. It had to pay tribute to the powerful Aztec Empire.

The symbol for Anenecuilco in the Codex looks like a blue stream with many branches. This shows how important water was to the town. Other towns like Tepoztlan were also in the same area.

The Huaxtepec region gave many things to the Aztec Empire. These included woven cotton cloth, loincloths, women's clothes, and rolls of native paper called amatl.

Spanish Arrival

In 1521, the Spanish arrived and conquered Mexico. Hernán Cortés, the Spanish leader, took control of Huaxtepec and the towns around it, including Anenecuilco. This system was called encomienda, where Spanish leaders were given control over native lands and people.

During the late 1500s, many people in Mexico got sick from new diseases. Sadly, many indigenous people died. But Anenecuilco managed to survive these difficult times.

The Spanish government tried to gather native people into new, larger communities. This was called congregación. However, Anenecuilco stayed an independent community even in 1603.

Rise of Haciendas

Over time, large farms called haciendas grew in the region. These haciendas often grew sugar cane. They took over land that was left empty after many people had died or moved.

Haciendas were built in Anenecuilco and nearby areas like Cuahuixtla. This showed that more Spanish people were settling in the region. In the 1700s, a family named Zapata leased land from one of these haciendas.

Land Conflicts and Revolution

In the 1850s, the haciendas started taking more and more of the town's shared lands. This happened because sugar cane farming was growing fast in Morelos. The nearby "El Hospital" hacienda was especially problematic.

It cut off Anenecuilco's access to important pastures and water. Eventually, it took over parts of the town's communal land. The people of Anenecuilco were very unhappy about this.

Around 1900, the governor of Morelos, Manuel Alarcón, tried to help. He tried to find a solution between the townspeople and the hacienda owner. But he was not successful.

This unfair situation made the people of Anenecuilco decide to fight back. They rose up against the hacienda owners. This dissatisfaction helped lead to the Mexican Revolution.

Anenecuilco was originally a community of Nahua (indigenous people). But during the late 1800s, more people of mixed heritage, called mestizos, moved in. They settled and married local people.
