Ang Thong (Thai: อ่างทอง) is a province in central Thailand. Its name means 'gold basin'. This name comes from the area's shape, which is like a basin. It also refers to the golden color of the rice grown there.
Ang Thong is surrounded by other provinces. To the north is Sing Buri. To the east is Lopburi. Ayutthaya is to the south. And Suphan Buri is to the west.
People in Ang Thong are known for their traditional crafts. These include beautiful palace dolls, special firebricks, and woven items. The province has over 200 Buddhist temples. Nine of these are very famous and people visit them for good luck. One of these, Wat Muang, has the huge Great Buddha of Thailand statue.
Geography
Ang Thong is a flat area with no mountains or forests. It's a low plain created by the Chao Phraya and Noi Rivers. Most of the land is used for farming. The two rivers and many canals (khlongs) provide plenty of water. This makes it perfect for growing rice.
History
Long ago, Ang Thong was called Wiset Chai Chan. It was located on the Noi River. This town was very important for the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It was a border town during wars with Burma. The Noi River acted as a natural barrier against enemy soldiers.
Later, after Ayutthaya fell, the main city moved. This happened during the time of King Taksin. The Noi River had become too shallow for boats. So, the city moved to the Chao Phraya River and was renamed Ang Thong.
Ang Thong is also famous for Likay. This is a traditional Thai folk song and dance. It is also the home of two brave heroes, Nai Dok and Nai Thongkaeo. They fought bravely in the Bang Rachan Battle.
Another local hero from Ang Thong is Khun Rong Palat Chu. His story is less known, but he was very brave. In 1759, he led 400 volunteer sword fighters. They were called "Kong Attamat". They helped the royal army fight against 8,000 Burmese soldiers. This happened during a war when the Burmese King Alaungpaya invaded part of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Khun Rong Palat Chu and all his fighters died in battle. Today, there is a monument at Wat Si Roi in Wiset Chai Chan to honor his bravery.
Symbols
The official symbol of Ang Thong province is a seal. It shows golden ears of rice in a bowl of water. This means the province is very fertile. It is one of Thailand's main areas for growing rice. The provincial tree is the gaub tree. The provincial fish is the red tailed tinfoil.
