Angastaco is a town in San Carlos Department, Salta Province, Argentina. It is located in the beautiful Calchaquí Valley. You can find it along the highway RN 40. In its original language, the town's name means "Eagle of the Carob tree."

Exploring Angastaco

Angastaco is in a valley surrounded by mountains. A river with the same name flows nearby. This river starts in Pucara and joins the Calchaquí River. It's amazing to see the bright green farms next to the sandy valley soil.

Since the mid-1700s, native groups lived in Angastaco. They were part of the Franciscan Mission of Calchaquí Rosario. This mission was located near Cafayate.

The town has a lovely Inn where you can stay. There is also a Civic Center with a small museum. This museum shows off local archaeological finds. The main church stands proudly near a town square. Moon-like Landscapes

Near Angastaco, on the way to Cafayate, the land looks like the moon. This is especially true in areas called "Glacier" and "Arrow." The views here change constantly with the light.

Finca El Carmen

About 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Angastaco is Finca El Carmen. You can reach it along National Route 40. This is a fertile valley nestled between mountains. It has a stream with unique "arrow" rock formations.

At Finca El Carmen, you can enjoy farm life and rural tourism. They offer places to stay and exciting trips to historic sites. You can also visit hot springs or go horseback riding. One of the oldest churches in the Calchaquí Valley is here. It was built in 1780 and restored in 1969. This place is worth visiting for its amazing scenery and local customs.

The New Church

The newer church has a colonial architectural style. The Municipality of Angastaco built it between 1976 and 1979. William Lee was the architect for this building. The church opened on December 8, 1979. Monsignor Diego Gutierrez Pedraza, the Bishop of Cafayate, opened it.

The Old Church

This older church dates back to 1945. It was built using local materials like bricks and bamboo. The floor was made of brick. It stands in the "Old Village" area, which has adobe houses. The streets here are no longer dirt, showing a piece of the town's history.

A Town's Slogan

Angastaco has a special saying and a poem about it:

"Green sand and wine ..." Walker who comes to this gritty town, allows you ofresca Angastaco their friendship, their fortunes and their wine that will drink happy while you step on the white heart of the Moon ...

The Red Mountains: Los Colorados

Los Colorados is a few miles west of Angastaco. It's a truly amazing place to see. It's a huge natural amphitheater. It is surrounded by colorful mountains, mostly red. These mountains are very close, not far away.

The beauty of Los Colorados is not just its landscape. In the center, you'll find "The Christ of Humility and Patience." A Salta artist named Cassina Colo created this statue. It's a replica of a Spanish Christ. This Christ is seated, with dark hair and beard. Its expression is very powerful and makes you think about being more kind.

You might even see condors here! Two condors once performed an amazing dance above the colorful hills. They flew without flapping their wings, using only the air currents. It was an unforgettable sight!
