Angel Tube Station: Key Facts
Angel station first opened its doors way back in 1901. It's famous for having the longest escalator on the entire London Underground network! This super-long escalator helps passengers travel between the ticket hall and the deep platforms below.
The Northern Line
The Northern line is one of the busiest lines on the London Underground. It runs from north to south through central London. Angel station is on the "Bank branch" of this line. This means that after Angel, trains go towards Bank station in the City of London.
Travelcard Zone 1
London's public transport system uses "zones" to help work out ticket prices. Zone 1 is the very center of London. This means Angel station is in a prime location, close to many famous landmarks and attractions.
The Longest Escalator
When Angel station was first built, it had a different design. It had an "island platform," which meant trains ran on both sides of a single platform. However, this became too crowded and unsafe. So, in the 1990s, the station was rebuilt. This major upgrade created two separate platforms and added the incredibly long escalator. This escalator is 60 meters (about 200 feet) long and rises 27.5 meters (about 90 feet)! It's like going up or down a 10-story building.
