About Old Street Station
Old Street station is a key transport hub. It connects people using the London Underground (often called the Tube) with those using National Rail trains. This makes it easy for many people to travel across London and beyond.
Where is Old Street Station?
The station is found at the busy crossroads of Old Street and City Road. This area is just north of the City of London, which is London's financial heart. Being in Travelcard Zone 1 means it's in the most central and often busiest part of the city.
What Trains Stop Here?
Old Street station serves two main types of train services:
- The Northern line of the London Underground: This Tube line runs through the station. You can catch trains heading towards Angel and Moorgate from here. The Northern line is one of the busiest Tube lines.
- Northern City Line trains: These are National Rail trains operated by Thameslink. They connect Old Street to places like Essex Road and London Moorgate. These trains usually run only on weekdays.
History of Old Street Station
Old Street station has a long history. It first opened in 1901 for the City and South London Railway. This was one of the earliest deep-level Tube lines. Later, in 1904, the Great Northern and City Railway also started using the station.
Over the years, the station has changed. Its original buildings were redesigned. This happened in 1929 to make it more modern and handle more passengers. The area around the station also changed a lot, including the building of the Old Street Roundabout.
