Angela Romero is an American politician who leads the Democratic Party members in the Utah House of Representatives. She has represented the 25th District since January 1, 2023. Before that, she represented the 26th District starting from January 1, 2013.

Early Life and Education

Angela Romero was born and grew up in Tooele, Utah. She is from both Chicana and Assiniboine backgrounds. She went to the University of Utah. There, she earned a bachelor's degree in political science. Later, she also earned a master's degree in public administration.

Angela Romero's Political Journey

Romero was first chosen to be a representative in November 2012. During the 2016 legislative session, she worked on several important committees. These included committees focused on criminal justice, economic development, and law enforcement. She also served on the Native American Legislative Liaison Committee.

Leading the National Hispanic Caucus

On February 26, 2018, Romero was elected as the First Vice President of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL). This group helps Hispanic state lawmakers work together. In March 2022, she was elected President-Elect of the NHCSL. She was expected to become President for the 2024-2025 term.

As a leader in the NHCSL, Romero visited the White House several times. She met with Vice President Kamala Harris on March 25, 2022. They talked about important issues for Hispanic communities. They met again on August 5, 2022, to discuss protecting certain rights. Romero also attended the signing ceremony for the Respect for Marriage Act on December 13, 2022.

Becoming House Minority Leader

On November 22, 2022, Angela Romero was chosen as the Minority Leader for the 2023-2024 term. She took over from Brian King. Her leadership team was special because it was the first time an all-women team led a party in the Utah House of Representatives. This happened shortly after the Utah Senate Democratic team also became all women. At the same time, Romero and Luz Escamilla became the first Latinas to be elected Minority Leaders in the Utah Legislature.

Personal Life

Angela Romero lives in the Glendale neighborhood with her son, Cio. She also works there as the Community Programs Manager for the Sorenson Unity Center. She is a Catholic.
