Angela Webber (born January 12, 1955 – died March 10, 2007) was a talented Australian writer, TV producer, and comedian. She was known for her funny ideas and for creating the popular children's TV show Mortified.
Early Life and Education
Angela Webber was born in 1955 in Sydney, Australia. Her father, Bruce Webber, worked in radio for the ABC. Her mother, Nan, was a journalist.
Angela grew up in West Ryde. She went to the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Sydney in Croydon. There, she was chosen as the School Captain. She also won a special award called the PLC Gold Medallion in 1972.
After school, Angela studied architecture at the University of Sydney. It was there that she found her love for writing comedy.
Career Highlights
In 1981, Angela joined Triple J, a youth radio station run by the ABC. She was part of a comedy group called "The J-Team." This group also included Lance Curtis. They were featured on a fun Sunday afternoon comedy show.
Later, The J-Team became the stars of the Triple-J breakfast show. Angela became well-known for her funny character, "Lillian Pascoe." Lillian was an old lady with a rebellious spirit who loved heavy metal music. She often said, "Rage 'til ya puke!" Angela even released a funny song as Lillian.
In 1984, Angela was diagnosed with breast cancer. She faced her treatments with courage and a good sense of humor.
After her daughters, Lily and Sally, were born, Angela wrote a book called The P-Plate Parent. She wrote it with Richard Glover. The book shared her funny experiences as a new mom. She also wrote jokes and scripts for famous TV comedians like Garry McDonald and Pamela Stephenson.
Mortified: A Hit TV Show
Angela's most famous work was the children's TV series Mortified. This show was a comedy-drama about how embarrassing parents can be for kids. In 2006, Mortified won an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Children's Television Drama.
The show became very popular around the world. It was sold to more than 15 countries. These included Britain, France, Italy, and Argentina.
Later Life
Angela Webber passed away on March 10, 2007, at her home in Coogee. She was 52 years old. She is remembered for her humor and her contributions to Australian television and radio.
