Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Angela Yuen Wu is a smart American computer scientist. She used to be a professor at American University. She is famous for her work in computer vision (which helps computers 'see') and computational geometry (which is about shapes and spaces in computers). She's especially known for her ideas on how computers can group things together (called k-means clustering) and find the closest things (called nearest neighbor search).

She also studied how computer systems can work together like a team, and how computers can build 3D models of objects using tiny blocks called voxels.

Her Education Journey

Angela Wu studied math at Villanova University for her first degree. Then, she earned a master's degree in math from Cornell University.

She finished her studies in 1978. She got her highest degree, a doctorate in computer science, from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her big research project was called Cellular Graph Automata. Her professor, Azriel Rosenfeld, helped her with this work.

Helping the Computer Science World

Angela Wu started the yearly Vision Geometry Conference. For many years, she was in charge of this important meeting.

She also became the president of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, which is an honor society for computer science students. She was president twice: first from 2002 to 2003, and again from 2008 to 2009.
