History of Angelus
Early Days and the Post Office
A post office opened in Angelus in 1894. This was important because it helped people send and receive mail. However, it didn't stay open for long, closing in 1911.
Angelus as a Trading Center
By 1910, about 30 people lived in Angelus. It was a local trading center, a place where people could buy and sell goods. The closest train stations were in nearby towns like Grinnell or Campus. These stations helped connect Angelus to other places.
How Angelus Was Founded
The community of Angelus was started by people from Saint Bernard, Nebraska. They were looking for good farmland that wasn't too expensive. The first settlers arrived in late 1887.
The Church and Its Name
A church called St. Paul's was founded around the same time, with 49 members by 1888. The community was named Angelus in 1892 by Rev. J. Disselkamp. He was the pastor of a church in Colby, Kansas that served the area. By 1937, the church had grown to 92 families and 588 members. The community also had a Catholic school run by the Sisters of the Precious Blood, which had 80 students.
Angelus: A Community Around Its Church
A story from 1987, celebrating the community's 100th anniversary, noted that "Angelus never really became a town." Instead, it was a community that grew up around its church. By 1987, the community's earlier businesses, like two grocery stores and three garages/gas stations, had all closed. Only the church, the school, and a few homes remained.
Population Today
There aren't official population numbers for Angelus today. However, Solomon Township, where Angelus is located, had a population of 179 people in the 2010 census.
