Angostura Bridge facts for kids
The Angostura Bridge is a very important suspension bridge in Venezuela. It crosses the mighty Orinoco River near the city of Ciudad Bolívar. The name "Angostura" comes from a Spanish word meaning "narrows," which describes how the river gets narrower at this spot.
Building the Bridge
This amazing bridge was finished in 1967. It cost about 35 million US dollars to build. The Angostura Bridge is very long, stretching for about 1,678.50 meters (that's over a mile!). The main part of the bridge, which hangs between its two tall towers, is 712 meters long.
A Key Connection
For many years, the Angostura Bridge was the only bridge that crossed the Orinoco River. Imagine how important that was for people and goods traveling across Venezuela! It connected different parts of the country and helped trade and travel.
In 2006, another bridge, called the Second Orinoco crossing, was opened about 100 kilometers downstream. Even with this new bridge, the Angostura Bridge remains a vital landmark and a key part of Venezuela's transportation network. It's a great example of engineering!
