Club History
Early Years and Rise to Top League
The Angoulême football club began in 1920. After many years, they achieved a big goal in 1969. That year, Angoulême was promoted to French Division 1. This was the highest football league in France.
Playing in Division 1
In their very first season in the top league, the team did surprisingly well. They finished in fourth place during the 1969–70 season. Because they did so well, Angoulême got to play in a European tournament. This was the 1970–71 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
European Competition
Angoulême played against a Portuguese team called Vitória S.C. in the Fairs Cup. They lost the first game away from home by a score of 3–0. In the second game, played at their home stadium, Angoulême won 3–1. However, they were still eliminated from the tournament because of the total score.
Return to Lower Leagues
In the next season, 1970–71, the club finished in 16th place. They managed to avoid being sent down to a lower league by just one point. But in the 1971–72 season, Angoulême finished last. This meant they were relegated to Division 2. Since then, Angoulême has not returned to the top French football league. They currently play in the fourth level of French football.
