Club History
Angoulême Charente Football Club was founded in 1920. For many years, they played in different French football leagues.
Reaching the Top League
A big moment for the club happened in 1969. That year, Angoulême was promoted to the French Division 1. This was the highest football league in France!
In their very first season in Division 1, the 1969–70 season, the team did amazingly well. They finished in a surprising fourth place. This high finish was a huge achievement for the club.
Playing in Europe
Because they did so well, Angoulême was invited to play in a special European tournament. This was the 1970–71 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. It was a big deal for a French club to play against teams from other countries.
Their opponent in this exciting tournament was Vitória S.C., a team from Portugal. Angoulême played two matches against them. They lost the first game away from home by a score of 3–0. In the second game, played at their home stadium, they won 3–1. Even though they won the home game, they were eliminated from the tournament because of the total score from both matches.
Back to Lower Leagues
After their successful first season, the next year was tougher. In the 1970–71 season, the club finished in 16th place. They just barely avoided being moved down to a lower league.
However, in the 1971–72 season, Angoulême finished in last place. This meant they were relegated, or moved down, to Division 2. Since then, Angoulême has not returned to the very top league of French football. They currently play in the fourth level of French football.
