Occupation Politician

Anil Biswas (born March 2, 1944 – died March 26, 2006) was an important Indian politician. People often called him Keru. He was a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) in West Bengal. From 1998 until he passed away in 2006, he was the secretary of the party's state committee and a member of its top decision-making group, the Politburo.

Early Life and Education

Anil Biswas was born in a farming family in a village called Darermath, near Karimpur in the Nadia district. Even when he was in high school, he became interested in political movements that aimed to help ordinary people.

In 1961, he went to Krishnagar Government College. There, he was inspired by leaders like Harinarayan Adhikari and Dinesh Mazumdar. He also became an active member of the Students' Federation of India, which is a student organization. He was a popular student leader in college elections. After getting a degree in political science, he moved to Kolkata to continue his studies.

His Political Journey

Anil Biswas officially became a full member of the CPI(M) in 1965. In the same year, he was arrested because of his political activities and spent 11 months in jail. Even while in prison, he managed to complete his master's degree in political science.

In 1969, he started working full-time for the party. He joined Ganashakti, a newspaper, as a reporter. He worked closely with Ganashakti until 1998. During the time he was its editor, the newspaper became very popular and sold many copies.

Anil Biswas became a member of the party's Central Committee in 1985. This is a very important group that helps run the party. In 1998, he became the General Secretary of the State Committee and also joined the Politburo. He learned a lot from another senior leader named Pramod Dasgupta.

He was also the editor of Marxbadi Path, which was a special magazine about Marxist ideas published every three months in West Bengal.

A Smart Strategist

Anil Biswas was known for being a very clever planner. He was often the person behind the party's big decisions in West Bengal politics. For example, he played a key role in suggesting that Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee should become the Chief Minister of West Bengal. This happened before the 2000 state elections, and he replaced Jyoti Basu, who had been Chief Minister for over 20 years. This was a smart move because many people in West Bengal wanted a change.

This decision helped the Left Front, a group of political parties, win a huge victory. They won even though there was strong opposition from Mamata Banerjee's TMC party.

In the 2006 West Bengal Assembly Election, Anil Biswas used his excellent planning skills as the State General Secretary. His strategies helped reduce the number of seats won by the opposition parties. He was very good at understanding what the public wanted and at managing the media and party workers on the ground. Many people believe that after Anil Biswas and other important leaders like Subhas Chakraborty passed away, it became easier for the opposition to win power from the Left Front.

Passing Away

Anil Biswas passed away on March 26, 2006. He had been hospitalized on March 18 after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Following his wishes, his body was donated to NRS Medical College and Hospital for medical study. He is survived by his wife, Gita, and his daughter, Ajanta.
