Biography

Early life and education

Anita Moorjani was born in Singapore. Her parents were Indian and spoke Sindhi. Soon after she was born, her family moved to Sri Lanka. When she was two, they moved to Hong Kong. Anita and her older brother, Anoop, grew up there.

They both went to British schools. Anita has shared that she was sometimes bullied. This was because she was an ethnic minority in a mostly British school. Because of her background, Anita grew up speaking many languages. She spoke Sindhi, Cantonese, and English.

Anita's parents were traditional. They wanted her to have an arranged marriage. But Anita felt she could not agree with their wishes. A few days before her wedding, she left home. This caused her family a lot of sadness. For a long time, she felt separated from the Indian community in Hong Kong.

Near-death experience

In February 2002, Anita was living and working in Hong Kong. She found a lump on her neck. Doctors told her she had lymphoma, a type of cancer. At first, Anita did not want to use regular medicine. She had seen loved ones, like her brother-in-law and best friend, pass away from cancer. This happened even after they had many treatments.

For several months, Anita tried different natural healing methods. But they did not help. Later, she started some regular cancer treatments. However, by the time she went to the hospital, her doctors said it was "too late." The cancer had spread all over her body. All of Anita's organs stopped working, and she went into a coma.

Anita woke up from the coma 30 hours later. She says that during those hours, she had a near death experience. She felt like she was outside her body. She could see and hear what was happening around her. Anita felt she did not want to return to her sick body. But she says her father and best friend encouraged her. They told her she needed to come back and "live her life fearlessly."

After she woke up, something amazing happened. Her tumors shrank by about 70% in just four days. Within five weeks, she was free of cancer. She was able to leave the hospital. She spent a few months doing physical therapy. This helped her regain her strength. Anita Moorjani remains cancer-free today.

Professional life

Anita shared her story of healing and her near-death experience. She sent it to a website called the Near Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF). This website is run by Dr. Jeffrey Long, an oncologist.

Her story caught the attention of Wayne Dyer. He was a famous American author. Wayne Dyer contacted his publishers, Hay House. He asked them to find Anita and suggest she write a book. They agreed to publish it.

Her book, Dying to be Me, came out in March 2012. It quickly became a New York Times bestseller. After this, Anita was invited to be on Wayne Dyer's TV special. She has also been interviewed on many other shows. These include "Fox And Friends" and CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360." Dying to be Me has sold over a million copies. It has been published in more than 40 languages.

In 2016, Dr. Oz became interested in Anita's case. He looked at her medical records. Then, he invited her to be on his show.

Since then, Anita has written three more books. These include "What if this is Heaven" (2016) and "Sensitive is the New Strong" (2021). She also wrote a children's book called "Love - A Story About Who You Truly Are" (2017).

Some people have different views about Anita's message. They believe that focusing on the mind alone to heal serious illnesses like cancer can be risky. However, many people find her story inspiring and helpful.

Medical explanation of recovery from cancer

There are different ideas about Anita's recovery. Dr. T.K. Chan was an oncologist who treated Anita. He said her recovery was due to medical procedures. These included draining her lungs. He also mentioned chemotherapy, which she had refused for four years. Dr. Chan stated that "with lymphoma, it's never too late." He added that "Hodgkin's disease is quite curable." It can respond well to chemotherapy.

However, another doctor, Peter Ko, had a different opinion. He reviewed Anita's medical records. He said that chemotherapy alone could not have caused such a fast recovery. He also noted that chemotherapy could have been very harmful given her weak organs. Dr. Ko suggested that "either her mind or body was able to send a message to the cancer cells to turn off the mutated genes." He agreed that chemotherapy works for Hodgkin's. But he said he had "never seen it work like this."
