About Anita Moorjani
Her Early Life and Background
Anita Moorjani was born in Singapore to parents from India. Soon after she was born, her family moved to Sri Lanka. When she was two years old, they moved again to Hong Kong, where Anita and her older brother, Anoop, grew up.
Anita went to British schools in Hong Kong. She has shared that she sometimes faced bullying because she was from a different background than most of her classmates. Because of her family's heritage and where she lived, Anita learned to speak several languages, including Sindhi, Cantonese, and English.
Her Near-Death Experience
In February 2002, while living in Hong Kong, Anita found a lump on her neck. She was diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of cancer. At first, Anita chose not to have traditional medical treatments. She had seen close family members and friends pass away from cancer, even after receiving many treatments.
For several months, Anita tried different natural healing methods, but her health did not improve. Eventually, she started conventional cancer treatments. However, by then, the cancer had spread throughout her body. Her doctors told her family that it was very serious. Anita's organs began to shut down, and she went into a coma.
Anita woke up from the coma 30 hours later. She says that during those hours, she had a powerful near death experience. She felt like she was outside her body and could see and hear what was happening around her. Anita felt a strong desire not to return to her sick body. But she felt encouraged by her father and best friend to come back and "live her life fearlessly."
After waking up, something amazing happened. Within just four days, Anita's tumors shrank by about 70 percent. In five weeks, she was completely free of cancer and was able to leave the hospital. She spent a few months doing physical therapy to regain her strength. Anita has remained cancer-free ever since.
Her Work and Books
After her incredible recovery, Anita shared her story with the Near Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF) website. Her experience caught the attention of Wayne Dyer, a famous self-help author. He encouraged his publishers, Hay House, to contact Anita and suggest she write a book.
Her book, Dying to be Me, was published in March 2012. It quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Since then, Anita has been interviewed on many TV shows and news channels around the world. Dying to be Me has sold over a million copies and has been translated into more than 40 languages.
In January 2016, Dr. Oz, a well-known doctor on TV, reviewed Anita's medical records. He was so interested that he invited her to be on his show.
Anita has written three more books since then:
- What if this is Heaven (2016)
- Love - A Story About Who You Truly Are (2017), a children's book
- Sensitive is the New Strong (2021), a book about self-empowerment
Some people, including medical experts, have different views on Anita's story and her message. They believe that relying only on positive thinking for serious illnesses like cancer can be risky. However, Anita continues to share her message of self-love and living without fear.
Medical Views on Her Recovery
Anita's recovery has been discussed by medical professionals. One oncologist, Dr. T.K. Chan, who treated Anita, said her recovery was due to medical procedures like draining her lungs and the chemotherapy she eventually received. He noted that Hodgkin's disease can respond very well to chemotherapy.
However, another oncologist, Dr. Peter Ko, reviewed Anita's medical records. He felt that chemotherapy alone could not explain such a fast and dramatic recovery, especially given how sick she was. Dr. Ko suggested that her mind or body might have sent a message to the cancer cells to heal. He said, "chemotherapy does work well with Hodgkin's, but I've never seen it work like this."
Her Personal Life
Anita Moorjani met her husband, Danny Moorjani, in Hong Kong. They got married in December 1995. Today, Anita and Danny live together in the United States.
